At Stanningley Primary School as part of the PSHE curriculum we will be teaching pupils about Social, Emotional and Mental Health. We will do this using the MindMate lessons which have been developed here in Leeds by teachers and mental health experts working together. The lessons have been funded by the South Leeds Clinical Commissioning Group as part of the Future in Mind programme. 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 10 children will suffer mental health problems at some time in their life.
The lessons are contemporary and interactive and will help pupils:
- understand their own feelings
- understand the emotions and mental heal needs of others
- ask for help when necessary
- support their friends and families to be mentally well
- reduce the stigma associated with mental health
There will be lots of interesting things for pupils to do. There will be clear ground rules to ensure that pupils are comfortable with the subject matter and all lessons have been created to be age appropriate.

Everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable. At times, anyone may need additional support to maintain or develop good mental health. The mental health of children and young people, adults in schools, parents and carers and the wider whole school community will impact on all areas of development, learning, achievement and experiences. At Stanningley Primary School we provide a healthy learning environment which provides opportunities that promote positive mental health, through the National Curriculum and extended provision, for example, PSHE and Mindmate sessions, Circle Time, P4C, play, nurture groups, differentiated learning activities, individual timetables, parents/carers events, challenging stereotypes, etc. At Stanningley we pride ourselves on a staff team that knows every pupil well and can spot where poor or unusual behaviour may have a root cause that needs addressing. Support that we provide includes, A whole school approach to promote the emotional health and wellbeing of all pupils. A culture within the school that values all pupils, allows them a sense of belonging and makes it possible to talk about problems Continuous professional development for all staff. The Family Support Manager, Mrs Di Greenwood, visiting homes and meeting families in school to support emotional wellbeing and aim to liaise with families about SEMH interventions and support available in school. Peer support. Working with outside agencies to provide interventions for pupils with health problems. For example, referral to Bramley Cluster in order to access a range of support such as Art Therapy, CBT, Child Counselling , Intensive Family Support and training referral to ABC for GATEWAY outreach work referral to Education Psychologist referral to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, CAMHS. With support from outside agencies we use Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires, SDQs to help judge whether individual pupils might be suffering from a diagnosable mental health problem in accordance with DFE Mental Health and Behaviour in Schools guidance 2015.

Young Minds The Parents Helpline is available to offer advice to anyone worried about a child or young person under 25.
