At Stanningley Primary School, we ensure that our children understand that:

The Equality Act became law in 2010 to protect everyone in Britain from discrimination, harassment and victimisation due to the protected characteristics we all have.

Under the Equality Act, it is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of any of the 9 protected characteristics, as follows:
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Sex/Gender
  • Gender reassignment
  • Race
  • Religion or Belief, or non-belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
The Equality Act protects you from discrimination:
  • At work
  • In education
  • As a consumer
  • When using public services
  • When buying or renting a property
  • As a member or guest of a private club or association
 
Stanningley Primary School is an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are of equal worth. The children and all key stakeholders are at the heart of everything we do. The protected characteristics are woven through our PSHE curriculum and the day-to-day routines of life at Stanningley and link to our work on British Values. The work we are undertaking towards achieving the Cultural Cohesion Quality Mark also directly links to this area too.

We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups.

Our approach to equality is underpinned by key principles which help us to eliminate discrimination:

Should anyone feel any effects of inequality at Stanningley, we will seek to obtain the person's views and make the necessary adjustments to ensure that the feeling of inequality is eliminated.
